Today in History, April 20, 1841:

The Murders in the Rue Morgue by Edgar Allen Poe is published in Graham’s Lady’s and Gentleman’s Magazine.

Considered to be the first Detective story, it focused on the work of Monsieur Dupin and his investigative prowess. Told in the view of a roommate much like Sherlock Holmes would be.
