1815 – President Madison approved a Congressional act purchasing former President Thomas Jefferson’s personal library for $23,950 to replenish the Library of Congress, which had been burned in 1814 when the British took DC in the War of 1812. Jefferson’s 6,487 books more than doubled the number of resources the Library had before the fire.
That’s a tremendous amount of books for an individual to have!
